Flag Salutation

We salute our National Flag and pledge our allegiance to the same.

It's honor and it's glory depend upon the zeal and assiduity with which each one of us will shoulder our responsibilities of a good citizen.

It's history written in letters of gold, inspires us to put in good work for the fair name of our country. We declare our unflinching loyalty to our National Flag and maintain that it's course shall be our course and that each individual amongst us shall make genuine effort to add to it's luster and glory and make it fly proudly aloft in the comity of Nations.

Helen Keller

Helen Keller - Our Inspiration

1880-1968

Born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA, in 1880, Helen Keller developed a fever at 18 months of age that left her blind and deaf.

With the help of an exceptional teacher, Anne Mansfield Sullivan of the Perkins School for the Blind, Helen Keller learned sign language and braille. A few years later, she learned to speak. As an adult she became a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. And in 1925, she attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.

The Lions accepted her challenge and our work ever since has included sight programs aimed at preventable blindness.

Helen Keller Day

In 1971, the Board of Directors of Lions Clubs International declared that June 1 would be remembered as Helen Keller Day. Lions around the world implement sight-related service projects on Helen Keller Day.

The Lions Emblem

On 17th July 1917 at the Invitation of Melvin Jones, delegates met in Chicago, The only point of contention was the selection of a name the New Organization. Melvin Jones researched the idea of calling the New Organization Lions. He was convinced that lion stood for strength, courage, fidelity and vital action. On a secret ballot the name LIONS was chosen over several others.

At the 1919 convention, there was a move to change the symbol, but a young attorney from Denver, Colorado rose to speak. His names was Halsted Ritter. "The name Lions stands not only for fraternity, good fellowship, strength of character and purpose, but above all, its combination of L-I-ON-S heralds to the country the true meaning of citizenship: LIBERTY, INTERLLEGENCE, OUR NATION'S SAFETY

Melvin Jones

Melvin Jones - Founder of Lionism

1879-1961

Melvin Jones was a dreamer, a doer and a pragmatist. He was an energetic, extroverted salesman who in private hours would reread Shakespeare. What better man to found the world’s largest association of service clubs?

The Lions International Board of Directors officially designated Jones as the founder of Lions Clubs in 1958—more than four decades after Lions Clubs held its first meeting. But, no matter what his official title, Jones’ impact on the Lions has been far-reaching. He provided the leadership, the organizational ability, the tenacity and the muscle necessary to establish the foundation for Lions Clubs International to become what it is today.

Jones was born on Jan. 13, 1879, at Fort Thomas, Arizona, a remote U.S. Army cavalry post where his father was a scout for the Army. At age 7, Jones’ family moved east and settled in Illinois. Gifted with a fine tenor voice, he considered making his career in music. Instead, he became an insurance salesman.
