The hotels, houses shops, offices etc in the coastal area experience salt corrosion of its electronic gadgets year after year, leading to a lot of E- waste generation, hence as a part of "Worldwide Environment Week" the Lions Club of Candolim along with the Village Panchayat of Candolim and Karo Sambhav conducted an E - Waste Collection Drive from 12th April to the 18th April in the village of Candolim. Items such as LED TVs, washing machines, dryers, laptops, mobiles, chargers CPUs, cables, routers etc were collected from hotels, shops, offices and homes. Through this drive the Club intends to responsibly dispose off electronic waste and divert large volumes of electronic junk from landfills reducing environmental damage. The items collected can sometimes be refurbished or recycled thus reducing the need for raw resource mining and also conserving energy. This was the third E - Waste collection drive conducted during this Lionistic year. 320 kgs of E- waste was collected. 19th April - Revival of Oyster Reef - Oyster reefs are like nature's guardians for riverbanks- cleaning the water, protecting the shore and supporting life. Candolim is blessed with an oyster reef along the Candolim river bank. This reef is steadily being depleted due to over harvesting of oysters along with rock junks of the reef, thus in keeping with the "Worldwide Environment Week" the Lions Club of Candolim proudly assisted the Village Panchayat of Candolim in a Biodiversity Project - "The Revival of the Local Oyster Reef" on the Candolim river bank. The reviving process had begun by adding rock pieces for a stretch of 500m along the river bank which will help oysters to grow, and support future growth. Through this initiative we intend to boost biodiversity as oyster reefs act as natural habitats, providing shelter and breeding grounds for fish, crabs and other aquatic life thus benefitting local fishermen and and their livelihoods. This will also act as a buffer against strong currents and minor flooding protecting the shore. This reflects the commitment of the Lions Club of Candolim to environmental conservation and the protection of marine ecosystems for future generations. 20th April - In keeping with the "Worldwide Week of Environment" The Lions Club of Candolim along with the Village Panchayat of Candolim successfully carried out a "Tree Plantation Drive along the bundh at the Candolim riverside, where 60 fruit-bearing plants were planted. This initiative aims not only to enhance the green cover but also to create a natural habitat and nesting place for a variety of birds. The addition of fruit-bearing trees will attract different species of birds, insects, and small wildlife, thereby enriching and supporting the biodiversity of the area. It will also enhance the aesthetic beauty of the proposed recreational park. We look forward to seeing these trees grow and contribute to a healthier, more vibrant ecosystem. 21st April - Fire Safety Week - The Lions Club of Candolim, in collaboration with the Village Panchayat of Candolim and the Fire Station, Porvorim and Pilerne, observed Fire Safety Week at St. Theresa’s High School, Candolim, with the aim of spreading awareness about fire prevention and safety among students. As part of the programme, a mock fire drill was conducted for over 545 staff and students of the school. The activity was designed to equip students and staff with practical knowledge on how to respond effectively during fire emergencies. Station Officer Shri Krishna Parrikar, Sub Station Officer Deepak Shetgaonkar, fire fighters, HM - Mr. Nicholas Cardozo, staff and students were present. 22nd April - On the occasion of World Earth Day and in keeping with the "Worldwide Week for Environment" the Lions Club of Candolim partnered with the Village Panchayat of Candolim in helping clean up the mangrove forests along the sides of the bundh near the Nerul bridge. Mangroves are nurseries for fish, crabs, prawns, other marine life and birds. When plastic and debris accumulate, they choke roots and destroy habitats. Cleaning helps preserve species that depend on mangroves for breeding and shelter. Mangrove roots stabilize riverbanks and act as natural barriers against tides and storms. When clogged with waste, their structure weakens, increasing the risk of soil erosion and flooding in nearby areas. The removal of more than 30 bags of waste plastic will definitely go a long way in protection of this biodiversity hot-spot. 23rd April - Talk on Protection of Environment and Rain Water Harvesting - keeping with the Worldwide Environment Service Week, The Lions Club of Candolim, in collaboration with the Village Panchayat of Candolim organized an informative talk on Environment Protection and Rain Water Harvesting for around 300 students of St. Theresa’s High School, Candolim. The session was conducted by esteemed guest speaker Mr. Sujeetkumar Dongre, Scientist ‘SE’ at the Centre for Environment Education. With his vast experience in environmental conservation, Mr. Dongre delivered an insightful presentation on the urgent need to protect our natural resources. He stressed the importance of sustainable practices, especially water conservation through rainwater harvesting, and explained how small individual efforts can collectively create a big impact. The talk also raised awareness about environmental challenges and inspired students to adopt eco-friendly habits in daily life. 25th & 26th April - Annual District Convention - Eleven members of the Lions club of Candolim attended the two days 50th District Convention held at Maratha Sankul, Porvorim Goa.
