Beach cleanup drive at Vagator Beach

Beach Cleanup Drive Report Plastic Lighthouse – A Joint Beach Cleanup Initiative Location: Vagator Beach Area, Goa Organizing Bodies: Lions Club of Mapuca under the leadership of MJF Lion Shreya Naik, Anubhuti Welfare Foundation Scouts & Guides of Assagao Union High School with support from Headmaster Shreedhar Naik, Scout Teacher Amit Virnodkar, and Guide Teacher Rashi Naik Theme: Plastic Lighthouse – Illuminating the Path to a Plastic-Free Future This collaborative effort brought together community leaders, welfare organizations, and educational institutions to address plastic pollution on Goa's pristine beaches. The initiative aimed to foster environmental awareness while actively removing waste from the coastal ecosystem. Objectives The primary goals of the beach cleanup drive were: To collect and dispose of plastic waste from Vagator Beach, reducing marine pollution and protecting local wildlife. To promote community engagement in sustainable practices under the "Plastic Lighthouse" theme, symbolizing hope and guidance toward eco-friendly habits. To educate participants, especially youth from Scouts & Guides, on the impacts of single-use plastics and the importance of collective action. To strengthen inter-organizational partnerships for future environmental initiatives. Participants and Coordination Approximately 80 dedicated volunteers participated in this event, representing a diverse group including: Members of the Lions Club of Mapusa, led by MJF Lion Shreya Naik along with Lion Manoj Chindarkar, MJF Lion Goculdas Nagvenkar, Volunteers from Anubhuti Welfare Foundation, under the guidance of Chinmay Kelkar. Students and faculty from Assagao Union High School's Scouts & Guides program, coordinated by Headmaster Shreedhar Naik, Scout Teacher Amit Virnodkar, and Guide Teacher Rashi Naik. The event commenced with an opening briefing at 9:00 am, where leaders emphasized safety protocols, waste segregation, and the theme's message. Volunteers were divided into teams equipped with gloves, bags, tongs, and reusable water bottles to ensure a hygienic and efficient cleanup. Activities Conducted Site Survey and Briefing : Participants gathered for an orientation session highlighting the theme "Plastic Lighthouse" – a metaphor for turning plastic waste into beacons of change through recycling and awareness. Cleanup Operations : Teams systematically covered a 1.5 km stretch of Vagator Beach, focusing on high-debris zones such as tide lines and tourist hotspots. Waste was segregated on-site into plastics, organics, and recyclables. Awareness Session: An interactive workshop led by Chinmay Kelkar and Shreya Naik discussed plastic's lifecycle, ocean pollution statistics, and practical tips for reducing plastic use. Waste Handover and Closure : Collected waste was handed over to local authorities for proper disposal/recycling, followed by a group photo. Achievements and Impact Waste Collected: Over 18 bags, including bottles, wrappers, straws, and fishing nets. This removal directly mitigates risks to marine life, such as turtles and seabirds, in the ecologically sensitive Vagator area. Community Engagement: The event engaged 80+ individuals, with a strong youth representation, fostering long-term environmental stewardship. Visibility and Awareness: Social media posts and local media coverage amplified the "Plastic Lighthouse" theme, reaching an estimated 500+ online viewers and inspiring similar drives. Partnership Success: This joint venture highlighted seamless collaboration, with each organization contributing unique strengths – Lions Club's leadership, Anubhuti's welfare expertise, and the school's educational outreach. Challenges Faced Minor challenges included uneven terrain and scattered debris due to recent tides, which were addressed through team rotations and extended coverage. Weather was favorable, but future events could benefit from additional signage for safer navigation. Conclusion and Recommendations The "Plastic Lighthouse" beach cleanup drive was a resounding success, demonstrating the power of unified community action in preserving Goa's coastal heritage. By removing substantial plastic waste and sparking conversations on sustainability, the initiative lit the way toward a cleaner future. We extend sincere gratitude to all participants, leaders and supporters. Together, we can keep Goa's beaches shining bright!

Global Environment Week of Service - Revival of Oyster Reef

Oyster reefs are like nature's guardians for riverbanks- cleaning the water, protecting the shore and supporting life. Candolim is blessed with an oyster reef along the Candolim river bank. This reef is steadily being depleted due to over harvesting of oysters along with rock junks of the reef, thus in keeping with the "Worldwide Environment Week" the Lions Club of Candolim proudly assisted the Village Panchayat of Candolim in a Biodiversity Project - "The Revival of the Local Oyster Reef" on the Candolim river bank. The reviving process had begun by adding rock pieces for a stretch of 500m along the river bank which will help oysters to grow, and support future growth. Through this initiative we intend to boost biodiversity as oyster reefs act as natural habitats, providing shelter and breeding grounds for fish, crabs and other aquatic life thus benefitting local fishermen and and their livelihoods. This will also act as a buffer against strong currents and minor flooding protecting the shore. This reflects the commitment of the Lions Club of Candolim to environmental conservation and the protection of marine ecosystems for future generations.

Global Environment Service Week - E - Waste Collection Drive

Candolim being a popular tourist destination has numerous hotels around it's coastal area as well as in the interior areas. The hotels, houses shops, offices etc in the coastal area experience salt corrosion of its electronic gadgets year after year, leading to a lot of E- waste generation, hence as a part of "Worldwide Environment Week" the Lions Club of Candolim along with the Village Panchayat of Candolim and Karo Sambhav conducted an E - Waste Collection Drive from 12th April to the 18th April in the village of Candolim. Items such as LED TVs, washing machines, dryers, laptops, mobiles, chargers CPUs, cables, routers etc were collected from hotels, shops, offices and homes. Through this drive the Club intends to responsibly dispose off electronic waste and divert large volumes of electronic junk from landfills reducing environmental damage. The items collected can sometimes be refurbished or recycled thus reducing the need for raw resource mining and also conserving energy. This was the third E - Waste collection drive conducted during this Lionistic year. 1090 kgs of e -waste was collected
